Meet the HyLICAL Team: Christian Bahl, SUBRA

Join us in our #HyLICALteam series as we continue to introduce the experts driving the HyLICAL project forward.

Today, we’re delighted to feature Dr. Christian Bahl, Lead Scientist at SUBRA A/S.

Role in HyLICAL

Subra’s role in the HyLICAL project is to design and model the superconducting magnet at the heart of the magnetocaloric system. SUBRA specializes in novel high-temperature superconductors, shaping and utilizing materials with near-zero electrical resistance. This enables highly efficient electricity transport, crucial for crafting powerful magnets, tailored to the specific needs of the HyLICAL project.

What about the HyLICAL project do you find the most interesting?

Designing superconducting magnets for magnetocaloric systems is thrilling and could significantly boost efficiency. Over the past decade, optimization in permanent magnet systems has led to major improvements in magnet utilization. The methods developed are versatile and applicable to other fields requiring magnet system optimization. In HyLICAL, we anticipate gaining new insights into tailoring and utilizing superconducting magnets, potentially impacting the design of magnets for fusion—an area central to SUBRA’s activities.

In which key sectors can HyLICAL’s research results be practically used?

HyLICAL’s research goes beyond just magnets; it’s a driving force for developing cryogenic magnetocaloric technology. This breakthrough will revolutionize hydrogen liquefaction, significantly impacting cryogenics, heat transfer, materials development, and hydrogen handling and safety. The advancements made here will not only be central to achieving HyLICAL’s goals but will also have a ripple effect, with applications extending far beyond the project’s immediate focus.

How will HyLICAL benefit the general public?

HyLICAL aims to make decentralized, affordable liquid hydrogen a key component of the green energy transition. This will enable liquid hydrogen to be used as fuel in scenarios where alternatives to fossil fuels are limited, providing a sustainable solution for the future of transportation.
